Classification: Exempt

Coordinates with: Academy Leaders, CEO, Teaching and Learning Team

Position Overview:

The Director of Special Education and Student Services is responsible for leading, developing, and managing all aspects of special education and student support services. This includes ensuring compliance with federal and state regulations, overseeing the implementation of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and Section 504 plans, and promoting inclusive practices that support the academic and social-emotional success of all students. The Director will collaborate with school leaders, educators, families, and external partners to create a supportive and effective learning environment for students with diverse needs.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership and Program Development

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive vision and strategy for special education and student services aligned with the school's mission and goals.
  • Oversee the design and delivery of programs that support students with disabilities, English language learners, and those requiring behavioral or mental health interventions.
  • Collaborate with academic leadership to integrate inclusive practices and differentiated instruction across all classrooms.
  • Compliance and Accountability
  • Ensure adherence to all federal, state, and local regulations, including IDEA, ADA, and Section 504.
  • Monitor and manage compliance-related documentation, timelines, and reporting requirements.
  • Lead the preparation for audits, reviews, and evaluations by regulatory agencies.

Staff Supervision and Professional Development

  • Recruit, train, and supervise special education teachers, social workers, and other related service providers and support staff.
  • Provide ongoing professional development opportunities focused on best practices in special education and student support.
  • Conduct regular performance evaluations and provide coaching to enhance staff effectiveness.
  • Collaboration and Stakeholder Engagement
  • Serve as the primary liaison between the school and families of students with special needs, ensuring clear and compassionate communication.
  • Coordinate with external agencies and service providers to support student needs. Participate in multidisciplinary teams to develop and review student support plans.

Data Analysis and Continuous Improvement

  • Collect and analyze data on student performance, program effectiveness, and service delivery.
  • Use data to inform decision-making and drive continuous improvement in programs and practices.
  • Report findings to stakeholders and use insights to adjust strategies as needed.
  • Conduct walk-throughs throughout the entire academies
  • Assist in working with an individual students or group of students in the classroom or in a separate setting removed from the classroom
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the CAO

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Special Education, Educational Leadership, or a related field
  • Valid state certification in special education and/or educational administration.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in pupil services or special education.
  • 2 years in a leadership role.
  • In-depth knowledge of special education laws, regulations, and best practices.
  • Strong leadership, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Commitment to equity, inclusion, and the success of all students

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in a charter school or similar educational setting.
  • Familiarity with data management systems related to special education.
  • Experience as an Assistant Principal or Principal
